Opening a message sent from Samuel Merritt University – Message Encryption by Microsoft Office 365


You may have received a message from a sender at Samuel Merritt University. You can tell if the message is using Message Encryption if its appearance is like this one:

The sender has sent you a message that contains sensitive information and therefore it has been encrypted. Follow the steps below to access the message and its contents.


  1. Save and open the attachment message.html as instructed in the dialog

  2. Download and open the attachment in your browser

  3. Choose the method to decrypt the message

    One-time passcode is the simplest initial method to decrypt. It requires no sign up or additional software. Users who have an O365, Outlook.com or legacy Hotmail account can authenticate with that account using Sign In


  4. Obtain the code sent via email

  5. Enter the One-Time passcode. You may keep the code active for a maximum of 12 hours. This is recommended only when accessing on a private computer
