How do I fix Windows or Office saying "not activated"?

This short KB explains how to fix when you see that Office or Windows or both are saying "not activated".

Windows or Office saying "not activated" on my SMU issued work PC.

Suggested solution that works (tested):

Log into VPN, and wait for your computer to communicate to our servers (usually takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes).

Activation should occur automatically.
