Steps to Add a Universal Print Printer to Your Lab Computer

SMU Computer Labs utilize Apporto to load a Windows 11 Virtual Environment. You must add your SMU account to be able to access Universal Print and add your area's printer. The following steps will demonstrate how to set things up and walk you through Universal Print setup. Once you complete this process and add the printer you would like to use, it will remain setup for future use of that printer. If you are in a different Computer Lab, all you will need to do in the future is to follow printer adding steps to add additional printers.


Adding your SMU account inside of the Virtual Environment

  1. Click on the Start Menu and Select the Settings Icon

  2. Inside of the settings menu select Accounts

  3. Inside of Accounts select Access work or school

  4. Inside of Access work or school click on Connect

  5. Enter your SMU email address and select Next

  6. On the SMU login page enter your SMU password

  7. Once your email is entered, you device will register

  8. If successful, you will see this confirmation screen. Select Done

  9. You will then see that your SMU account has been added.

Steps to Add a Universal Print Printer 

  1. Open Settings: Click the Start button and select Settings (or press Windows key+I). 

  1. Navigate to Devices: In the Settings window, click on Bluetooth & Devices.

  1. Go to Printers & Scanners: Select Printers & scanners from the list on the right.

  1. Add Device: Click the Add device button next to "Add a printer or scanner".

  1. Sign In: During the setup, you may be prompted to Sign in. Enter your SMU email credentials to authenticate with the Universal Print service. 
     

  2. Select Work or School: When prompted, ensure you select Work or school to connect to Universal Print.

          7. Search and Add: Windows will search for printers shared with you.

  • Find the desired printer in the list that appears. 

  • Click the Add device button next to the printer’s name to install it. 
     

The Universal Print printer will now be installed and available for use from any application on your Windows 11 device. 

 

Print a Document 

  1. Open any application that supports printing.

  1. Go to the File menu and select Print.

  1. In the print dialog, select the printer you just added that is registered with Universal Print. 

  1. Set your desired printing attributes (e.g., number of copies, duplex printing, page range). 

  1. Click Print.
