I received this notification on my computer about Microsoft Office Updates.  What does this mean?

Your computer is receiving the latest updates to the Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Why is this happening?

SMU IT deploys the latest security and feature updates to eligible systems to ensure that our users receive the latest bug fixes and security updates to Microsoft Office applications.  This helps keep computers secure and eliminates potential issues in Microsoft Office and ensures the greatest compatibility level between Office Applications and other apps.

I haven't seen this before.  When did this start?

On October 8th 2024, SMU IT enabled Cloud Update in the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center.  Windows 10 Systems issued to SMU employees were migrated to the current branch of O365, where updates are published from the cloud to devices each month.
You may have seen a notification in the system tray of your windows PC some time after October 8th. 2024.

What happens or what should I do if I receive the notification?


You can click the icon and let the updates install if you like. You may be prompted to close open office applications for the updates to proceed.  Updates will be required after 3 days from the latest monthly release and take only a short time to install, typically 1-2 minutes.

You will see a message as shown below notifying you that Office 365 applications are up to date.
