Your Samuel Merritt account uses Okta for SSO to sign in to most of our applications. After 10 failed attempts, it will lock you out.
If you repeatedly are getting locked out, there are numerous possible causes if it is not just entering the password wrong 10 times or more.
- If signed into Microsoft office with your SMU account, sign out and back in, verify through Okta
- If your web browser autofills your passwords, check for any old passwords stored in your password list in your browser settings (privacy & security area) and remove those relevant to your SMU account and re-enter manually
- If your phone has your Outlook account on it either through Mail or the Outlook app, be sure its connected and receiving and sending messages and not disconnected.Same for iPads.
- Go here https://mysignins.microsoft.com/ to check where you are signed in, which devices, verify your account is up to date on those devices in the installed apps.
- If you have an SMU issued HP laptop, be sure you sync your "Okta" password to the password you use to sign in to your laptop.
- If remote, sign into vpn. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and click lock screen. Sign back into laptop with Okta password.
- If not remote, and still on wifi, same method but to sign into VPN use 10.24.175.12 in place of sslvpn.samuelmerritt.edu and click "Connect Anyway".
- If not remote and on a dock station, just restart the computer and sign in with your okta password.
- Tech can assist you with advanced things to check:
- Registry: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities clear listed items but backup registry first.
- Windows credential manager - clear windows credentials listed.
- Connected sharepoint lists in Outlook profile (remove subscription to Sharepoint / Onpoint lists in File->Account Settings->SharePoint Lists tab).
If you cannot determine using these steps, call our 24x7 helpline for support to get unlocked, be prepared to verify with your employee or student ID.
