If user has access to their account, they can reset their MFA settings by the following steps.

1. User sign into mySMU Login located on the to top right of https://www.samuelmerritt.edu/

2. Click on your username on the top right and select 'Settings'.

3. Here you'll have access to reset or setup your Security Methods

NOTE:  Samuel Merritt University will no longer support phone-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) — SMS (text messaging) and voice call — effective March 25, 2025, as they are no longer being supported by Okta. This change is part of a broader move to improve security and protect against vulnerabilities that can occur with SMS and voice technologies.

Alternatively, the Tier 2 SMU IT technician can reset the MFA authenticators ONLY after validating the requester's identity outlined in the following KB article.

Identity Verification for Account Management, Access and Password Resets

Upon successful identity verification, the technician can move forward with resetting MFA authenticator(s) by following these steps.

1. Locate the user in the Okta dashboard.

2. Click on 'More Actions' > Reset Authenticators

3. Select the authenticator(s) to reset and click 'Reset Selected Authenticators'
