Okta New User Registration Process
Step 1 (Email) -
- Check your email inbox for the activation email sent by SMU Okta. For new students, please check your personal email address. If you can't find it, make sure to also check your spam or junk folder. Received email looks like below shown figure 1. *If you haven't received it, please contact support at 510-907-2555 option 1.
- Open the activation email from SMU Okta. The email should contain a link that you need to click to activate your account. The link is typically labeled as "Activate Okta Account".
- Click on the "Activate Okta Account" in the email. This will take you to a web page where you can complete the activation process.

Step 2 (Setup MFA) –
- Set up multi-factor authentication: You will be prompted to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring additional verification, such as a code generated by an Okta Verify app.
- Once you clicked on Activate Okta Account from step 1 it will take you to figure 2 as shown below. Now click “Setup”
- After you clicked on setup, I will take you to next screen where it displays barcode to be scanned from your phone as shown in figure 2.1
- You need to download the app and register with your Okta account. Detailed process will be explained in step 3.
Step 3 (Setup Okta Verify) –
- Download Okta Verify app from your App store (Apple Device) or Play Store (Android Device).
- Follow the process as shown in the below pictures after downloading Okta Verify app.
Step 4 (Setup New Password) –
- After the MFA setup, you will be asked to create new password for Okta Account and moving forward this new password will be your new SMU password to access all SMU resources.
- Click setup as shown in below figure 4.1 and enter new password and re-enter new password again as shown in figure 4.2 and click next when done.
Step 5 (Additional MFA - Optional) –
- This step is to use Security Key or Biometric authenticator to sign into Okta.
- Click Set Up from below shown figure 5.1 or Set up later to skip this step.
- Once you click on Set Up it will ask you to use passkey, at this point you can choose Use a phone or tablet and proceed as shown in below figure 5.2
- Now it will display a barcode as shown in below figure 5.3 that you have to scan from your phone or tablet camera.
Step 6 (First look at Okta Dashboard) –
- The below will be the first look of your dashboard, you will be seeing many apps that’s been assigned to you.
Step 7 (First login into Okta) –
- All the above steps are initial configuration, after first configuration when you attempt to login into Okta you may prompted for MFA.
